A while ago, I wrote a blog about Mariellen Ward. She is a Journalist by profession, blogger by passion, Yogini by training, Canadian by birth and Indian in spirit…all in all, a most beautiful soul! Given her love for India and all things Indian, we bonded in no time. We were at the Journal Editorial Board meeting of TorontoBodyMind a couple of days ago, and after the meeting, we went to a South Indian restaurant on Bloor Street. BTW, if you are around Bloor/Christie area in Toronto, don’t forget to check out this restaurant ‘Madras Masala’. We were talking about Yoga, a passion we both share, and I narrated the story of Dharmavyadha from Mahabharata to explain how Yoga is not meant to be confined to Yoga studios but rather is a way of living and meant for everyone in every wake of life.

Mariellen wrote this awesome blog on her site www.breathedreamgo.com and breathed new life into the story and the point I was making. I highly recommend this blog to anyone who wants to understand what is Yoga in its all-encompassing sense, the way it was intended by ancient Rishis. Here is the link to her blog…happy reading!

Sep 1, 2011 happens to be the fourth day of the lunar month called ‘Bhadrapada’, which is celebrated all over the world as Ganesha Chaturthi or Ganesha’s birthday. Many people think Ganesha is yet another odd Hindu deity with an elephant’s head and do not know that Ganesha is actually a cosmic phenomenon. I wrote a blog about Ganesha on Toronto Body Mind, explaining Ganesha from different viewpoints and different traditions. It makes a pretty interesting read, click on the link below to read it…

There, I met a beautiful soul whose heart is full love for India, her culture, her food, her Yoga and philosophy, her Bollywood….the whole enchilada. Ladies and gentlemen, her name is Mariellen Ward and she is a blogger-extraordinaire and published author! Mariellen is the author of “Song of India” – a collection of her travel blogs published in various prestigious publications such as the Toronto Star, Discover India magazine – as well as an e-book called “9 Travel Perspectives”. Mariellen is a professional Journalist and worked in the industry as a copywriter. Somewhere along the lines, she discovered her ‘muse’ (for those who don’t know, that’s journalism speak for one’s area of passion in writing…I didn’t know it until yesterday, if it’s any consolation) to be India, promptly quit her job and is happily pursuing her passion of “Eat, Travel and Blog” (not necessarily in that order). She also received training in Yoga in Krishnamacharya’s lineage from their Mandiram in Chennai. And, I wouldn’t have done justice to Mariellen if I didn’t mention her great talent for capturing the beauty of India thru her camera lens!

Here is what her blog “Breathe Dream Go” stands for, from the horse’s mouth: “BreatheDreamGo is my vision. The name says it all. It’s a Mantra and it summarizes my own experience and it’s a formula for others to follow. Breathe is the wisdom of Yoga and the importance of Prana, breath. Dream is knowing who you are and where you want to go. Go is doing it, taking the steps: creating, studying, volunteering, traveling and giving”. Ah, I couldn’t have done that any better!

BTW, she takes her food seriously and is as good at whipping up a Dal or Curry a la Indien as she is with her pen! Consider yourself lucky if you get invited to savor her home-cooked food!

I know I shouldn’t stand between you and her engaging blog for too long, so here is the link to her blog…happy reading! While you are there, don’t forget to write a few comments on her posts, I am sure you won’t miss her penchant for writing about India. Also, Mariellen will be covering the upcoming (or, already here!) IIFA, so check back with her blog for regular updates…

On Oct 8th, I played Sitar at Downward Dog Yoga, Queen St location during the self-practice Mysore session conducted by Ron Reid and Marla Meenakshi. Ron and Meenakshi are such sweet souls and so down-to-earth in spite of being such well-known people in the Yoga world, it’s amazing! They made me very comfortable, gave me complete artistic freedom to play what I feel like…and the participants at the session just loved the soothing sounds of Sitar. With his characteristic simplicity, Ron says “everybody loved it” and that means a lot!

I am very excited that I will be back at Downward Dog Yoga on Friday Nov 26th from 3:00-5:00 pm with my Sitar during another Mysore session with Ron and Meenakshi!

It’s going to be great, people!!

Did you know that Sanskrit is taught in some schools in Ireland? I didn’t, until my friend and a great Sanskrit scholar Vamshi Krishna Ghanapathi posted this on his blog (as well as Facebook). This blog captures the talk by Rutger Kortenhorst, Sanskrit teacher at John Scottus school in Dublin, Ireland and is entitled “What does my child do with Sanskrit?”.

Just to recap some of the things Rutger points out about Sanskrit…

*Sanskrit stands out above all other languages for its beauty of sound, precision in pronunciation and reliability as well as thoroughness in every aspect of its structure

*The exceptional features of Sanskrit have been recognised for a few centuries all over the world, so you will find universities from many countries having a Sanskrit faculty. Whether you go to Hawai, Cambridge or Harvard and even Trinity College Dublin has a seat for Sanskrit

*Although India has been its custodian, Sanskrit has had universal appeal for centuries. The wisdom carried by this language appeals to the West as we can see from Yoga and Ayurvedic Medicine as well as meditation techniques, and practical philosophies like Buddhism and most of what we use in the School of Philosophy. It supports, expands and enlightens rather than conflicts with local traditions and religions.

*The precision of Sanskrit stems from the unparalleled detail on how the actual sounds of the alphabet are structured and defined. The sounds have a particular place in the mouth, nose and throat that can be defined and will never change. This is why in Sanskrit the letters are called the ‘Indestructibles’ [aksharáni]

*Sanskrit is the only language that has consciously laid out its sounds from first principles

*Sanskrit automatically teaches your child and anybody else studying it to pay FINE attention due to its uncanny precision. When the precision is there the experience is, that it feels uplifting. It makes you happy.

*By studying Sanskrit, other languages can be learnt more easily; this being the language all others borrow from fractionally. The Sanskrit grammar is reflected in part in Irish or Greek, Latin or English.

*Sanskrit has the most comprehensive writings in the world expressed through the Vedas and the Gítá. The Upanishads –translated by William Butler Yeats have given people from all over the world an insight into universal religious feelings for more than one century now.
